If you love the 4th of July, then Alexandria, Indiana, is the place to visit. Known during World War II as Small Town USA, Alexandria remains the classic embodiment of an all-American small town.
During the Second World War, the United States government selected Alexandria to represent the typical American small town in an international propaganda campaign. To this day the city hosts the Small Town USA Festival; a community wide celebration that involves live music, crafts, food, and exhibits.
This festival takes place in the fall; but come summertime in Alexandria, more patriotic fun is up for offer at the city’s 4th of July celebrations. These include live music performances, where local and national musicians sing patriotic classics such as Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” as spectators wave small flags in the audience, and military veterans are often honored in commemorative ceremonies. July 4th festivities also include several elaborate fireworks shows, including one staged at the Alexandria-Monroe Intermediate School.
Elsewhere in Alexandria, visitors can experience small town charm in the form of family-owned restaurants and antique stores, as well as at the city’s only movie theater.
Alexandria, Indiana, is also home to a number of beautiful city parks, both in its downtown and outlying rural areas. These could be prime spots for a 4th of July party, complete with a full array of patriotic party supplies. These could include American flags in all sizes, a bright starburst centerpiece, hanging paper and foil decorations in the likeness of fireworks, a cardboard stand up that depicts a patriotic character such as Uncle Sam or The Statue of Liberty, a tulle or tissue banner in the colors of red, white and blue, balloons in the same hues, etc.
An amazing place to visit for the 4th of July is Alexandria, Indiana; the original Small Town USA.
