The Field of Dreams farm is a great place for baseball fans to visit because it embodies the spirit of the game and the belief that on a warm summer evening, at a baseball diamond magic can happen. One of the most famous baseball movies ever made is the 1989 drama-fantasy film “Field of Dreams. The film was adapted from a novel by W.P. Kinsella, titled Shoeless Joe and starred Kevin Costner,, Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, and Burt Lancaster in his last major film appearance. The film was nominated for three Academy awards and still today decades later, it sparks the imagination of baseball fans everywhere. The film was shot on two adjacent farms just outside of Dyersville, Iowa. The baseball field still stands as does the house used in the film. Both have become tourist attractions and luckily for baseball fans they have been kept as close to what you see in the film as possible; with very little commercialization. The pristine nature of this attraction is a tribute to what is best about baseball. Instead of being bombarded with commercial features, the fans can use their imaginations to conjure up their own dreams.
The movie was the story of a man, played by Kevin Kostner, who loved baseball and believed against all odds in his own dream. As a result, he helped to realize the dreams of others, save his farm, and perhaps most importantly heal the relationship with his father. That is heady stuff to ask of a baseball diamond and a love of the game.
Fortunately, in true baseball fashion there is a concession stand at the field where fans can get memorabilia that’s perfect as souvenirs or for those extra special baseball party supplies that will make any baseball party a complete hit with fans. The field has been used for charity events in the past and even hosted a local baseball team on Sunday afternoons for a time. Two families originally owned the field, but now one family owns it and they have put it all up for sale.
