The facility is not just about those legendary players of the past and some more current players, but also about the history of the game. A former director of athletics at Colby College, by the name of Lee Williams set about to open the Naismith Hall of Fame back in 1959. The full name is the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and is tasked with the preservation and promotion of the game at all levels. It also is to serve as archive library for the history of the sport. Since it’s begin it has honored almost three hundred individuals and eight teams, with each new class of inductees consisting of six players, three coaches and one contributor to the game each august.
