BBQ Travel Ideas
If you love BBQ then the Lexington Barbecue Festival is a place to visit (not Lexington Kentucky but Lexington North Carolina). The City of Lexington and Davidson County officially declared October as Barbecue month. The Festival is held in Uptown Lexington. Today, the festival has become an annual tradition that is held on one of the last two Saturdays in October. The 28th Annual Barbecue Festival is set for Saturday, October 22nd, 2011.
Over 400 exhibitors sell homemade food, arts & crafts at this popular BBQ festival. A sponsored competition by Carolane Propane Gas, Inc., is held throughout two blocks of Main Street in front of the Davidson county Museum of Art. The Lexington style of barbecue (referred to as Piedmont style) uses a vinegar-based red sauce that is seasoned with ketchup, vinegar, and pepper, with other spices. It is most common in the Piedmont (central) and western areas of the state. The sauce also serves as the seasoning base for red slaw (barbecue slaw), which is coleslaw made by using Lexington-style barbecue sauce in place of mayonnaise.
Five stages of entertainment at the BBQ fest showcase local and national artists at the fest. Barbecue, slaw, and french fries are the showcase of the festival. Events include Tour de Pig - the annual cycling event benefiting the Mental Health Association in Davidson Golf tournament, tennis tournament, 5K Hawg run, Hawg Shoot Air Rifle Tournament. The Barbecue Festival provides an opportunity for civic and non-profit organizations to raise funds by providing parking or selling concessions, raffle tickets, etc. Organizations can provide information to the public as well.
The BBQ Festival has grown exponentially over the last couple of decades and in 2003 crowds were estimated at more than 150,000 visitors to Lexington. For those who wish to travel by train, the Barbecue Festival Express is available. The Piedmont, originating from Raleigh, and the Carolinian, originating from Charlotte, makes their once-a-year stops in Lexington for the Barbecue Festival. For those who cannot make the Lexington BBQ Festival, no harm in making ones one BBQ with plenty of great food and party supplies.
