Hawaiian Luau Party Planning
The party planning for a Hawaiian Luau is usually fun, but don't let the summer heat go to your head. A luau is fairly easy to put together. All you really need is roast pig, some leis, Hawaiian shirts, tiki torches and Hawaiian music. The guests can provide their own Hawaiian costumes, from tee shirts to grass skirts to swimsuits if the guests will have access to a pool.
A traditional Hawaiian Luau menu boasts a whole roast pig for the guests and if you head to any of the resorts on the islands, this is still a popular treat. Closer to home though, it's more acceptable to offer up a roasted ham or pork tenderloin. Guests will enjoy some other traditional Hawaiian dishes with it. Poi Poi is a root paste often served with roast pork. Spam sandwiches are also popular in Hawaii and make a fun addition to the table. Decorate your table with bowls of Macadamia nuts, whole pineapple and other fruits for food and to add to the atmosphere.
The party planning for that Hawaiian Luau should include preparations for the party area. Most Luaus are held outdoors, in the summer and usually in the evening or at night. Make sure to set up your decorations in an outdoor area large enough to hold all of your guests for eating, moving around and for games. Lit tiki torches in the area around the luau party will provide light and can help keep the bugs at bay. Either set out blankets for guests to sit on when they eat or get enough tables together to hold everyone.
Additional party supplies, like leis, hula hoops, electric lights, flower centerpieces and even wall murals of Hawaiian scenes will ensure that your party looks the party of a luau as well. Make up party favors for the guests to take home from the event in the form of gift bags filled with beads, leis, plastic flowers, cocoanuts, and even chocolate covered Macadamia nuts. |
