Hippies Travel Ideas
In the 1960s, the Haight-Asbury district of San Francisco, California was center of the hippie universe. If you like hippies, this is a place to visit. Though “The Haight” now features lots of high-end boutiques and other trendy shops and cafes, there are still some remnants of the 1960s hippie era that remain. Shops like “ Dreams of Kathmandu” and “The Love of Ganesha” feature far out hippie relics that conjure up images of flowers, peace signs, and love beads. Many hippie party supplies, such as tie-dye napkins and psychedelic scene setters, are based on these symbols of the hippie era. Lots of bookstores and gift shops also populate the Haight, including out-of-the-ordinary shops like the anarchist “Bound Together” book store and the retro punk “Cheap Thrills.” You can also see the Grateful Dead house on Ashbury street, which was a sort of a commune where the Grateful Dead lived during the Summer of Love, along with other passers-through. Other famous houses include the Jefferson Airplane house and Janis Joplin house. You can see these houses on the Flower Power walking tour, held every Tuesday and Thursday. The tour lets you to explore the neighborhood's hippie history along with an explanation of general neighborhood history and of the beautiful Victorian architecture of the area.
Visitors to the Haight can go to Gargoyle beads to build your own bead necklaces, then stop by one of the The Haight's many cafes and restaurants for an afternoon break. If you visit during June, catch the Haight Ashbury street fair which features local bands, art, and great food. Despite some recent modernization, the Haight Ashbury district definitely holds the hippie spirit and is great inspiration for a hippie party theme. More ideas for Hippies
