Pirates throughout the centuries have inspired many things in pop culture, including movies, costumes, songs, cartoons and parties, even influencing various pirate party supplies. The story centers around Cocos Island in Costa Rica, where in 1883, British sea captain-turned-pirate William Thomson buried a large treasure there, which he had stolen from a Spanish fleet. The treasure included a full-sized solid gold statue of the Virgin Mary along with many precious jewels. He buried the treasure on Cocos Island. Later on, Thomson and his pirate crew were captured. They were all hanged except for Thomson and his first mate. Thomson told the Spanish that if he spared their lives, he would take them to the buried treasure on Cocos Island. However when they arrived at the island, they escaped into the forest and were never found. According to legend, Thomson later left the island with a whaling boat, but without the treasure. To this day it hasn't been found.
Because of Cocos Island's ideal location and its ample supply of wood (the rain forest) and coconuts, it made for a good hangout for pirates. Another treasure rumored to be buried here was the Devonshire treasure buried by Benito “Bloody Sword” Bonito.
In addition to discovering pirate lore (and possibly buried treasure), Costa Rica has lots of other fun activities as well, including scuba diving, night life, horseback riding, white water rafting, and general beach bumming.
