Westminster Kennel Club is the oldest and most prestigious dog show in the world dating back to 1876 when a group of sporting gentlemen in the bar of a Manhattan hotel trade stories about their shooting accomplishments and the talents of their dogs. Eventually they form a club and name it after their favorite hotel: The Westminster Breeding Association. This was the beginning of something that even the founders would have imagined. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is held annually at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.
The National Dog Show is held annually and has more than 160 breeds of dogs that will be judged to determine best in show. Breed winners proceed to judging in the seven groups-- Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Top dogs from the groups comprise the field for the culmination of the Shows in the main ring. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s shows are sanctioned by The American Kennel Club and help raise money for a variety of canine-related causes.
