Yom Kippur History and Facts
The Jewish holiday Yom Kippur is a special day of atonement. You’ll find that even amongst the most secular of Jews this holiday is observed. There are several daily activities that are abstained from during Yom Kippur. First and most obviously the observers fast for twenty four hours. They start fasting a half an hour before sundown on the day before the holiday and finish it by eating a large meal after nightfall on the day of Yom Kippur. This meal is very special and of course the observers breaking their fast are very hungry. They say food is flavored best by hunger, so everything must be delicious.

Other things abstained from during Yom Kippur are drinking, washing, and wearing leather shoes.
